Well class, I actually asked this question during class but
I want to hear your opinion on it. As
you know, lucid dreaming is when we can control what is happening in our
dream. So, suppose you are having a
lucid dream and you do something immoral.
When you wake up, should you feel guilty about it? Tell me why you feel the way you do.
It's hard to decide whether or not you should feel guilty for this sort of thing; however, I think you should feel guilty. Personally, even the thought of hurting someone automatically makes me feel bad. So hurting someone in your dreams and being aware that you're doing it should be just as harmful. But, that's just for me. It's different for everybody. Maybe they wouldn't feel guilty, but I would.
ReplyDeletePersonally I feel that we should not feel guilty because IT IS a dream however dwelling on them or putting them in your mind after you wake up is wrong and it should be avoided.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Maciel, It is a dream but dwelling on the action or continuing thinking about it can hurt you. like we said in class if a dream is causing a problem in your life you should go get help. so I think if you do something immoral in your dream then you continue to dwell on it and it affects your life then you should go get help from something.

If you do something in the dream that you would never do in real life, so doing it because it's the only time you feel you could then you should feel guilty because it is still your thoughts and your conscious mind. But if you do what you desire then it is hard to say; i honestly don't have a yes or no answer- Jacob Bingham
ReplyDeleteI agree with both jacob and gabby. We shouldn't think about are dreams all the time, because then that would be the life we are living, so we shouldn't feel guilty about them unless we want it to happen but, if you don't then there is no reason to feel guilty about it.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I think it would be natural to feel guilty. Maybe not for everything, but to an extent of the material that you're dreaming about. If you are the one controlling the dream, then subconsciously you are thinking about those thoughts. For example: if a man can control sexual dreams to benefit his pleasure, then some time in reality that man has had that same thought but has suppressed it maybe because he knows it's wrong. Of course there is also the side that my fellow classmates have taken, "dwelling on a dream can hurt your life," and I think that's true--to an extent. There are some issues in life that may relate to pornography, and people can dwell and be so addicted to such a thing that it follows them in their sleep and that kind of situation can truly damage a person if they dwell on it without seeking help. However, if you dream about stealing a loaf of bread in your dream because you're starving and wake up to find that you were just hungry in real life and wanted some toast; that doesn't mean you should dwell on it and feel guilty about your thoughts.. so, should I feel guilty about committing something immoral in my dreams? Maybe. Maybe not. I think it depends on the person, the person's life, and the actual dream itself.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I think you should feel guilty. I know it's the cool thing to say no but when I'm dreaming at least sometimes I don't know that I'm dreaming. I don't really know until I wake up and I'm like oh good, I was dreaming. So yes I think you should feel guilty. Because while your dreaming and you think it's real and all the things are going exactly your way and you do something wrong you thought of that and you went through with that and that's just not right.
ReplyDeleteYes it's a decision we made not just our subconscious running a muck out of our control, and I've never been able to lucid dream so I don't have first hand experience on it, but i have a feeling our emotions and thoughts are a lot less inhibited when we're dreaming and asleep. It's probably a decision we'd ever make awake, and i think ,honestly, it's just a dream and no one will knows what we dream but ourselves. It's not something we actually did in real life and it's almost a little ridiculous sitting around feeling guilty for something we didn't physically do and that no one else knows we thought. I also think that if someone made themselves do something immoral in a lucid dream and our emotions and thoughts are the same as when we're awake then they probably don't just dream immoral things in their sleep but think about them in their waking life as well. If that's the case then you have more to worry about than things you acted out in a dream.
ReplyDeleteI personally believe that you should feel some guilt because you are sort of in control of your dream. However I don't think it is a serious issue because in your mind you are still not consciously aware of it. But if you have a habit of it and this is how you get pleasure in life, then it is worse and should be stopped. But all in all you should feel some quilt but also know that it is not completely in your control.
ReplyDeleteI think that you should feel some guilt because you are in control of what you are dreaming. You don't need to worry about it being a serious issue unless it becomes a habit and/or it turns into actions. You have control of it and you can stop it.
ReplyDeleteI believe that if you have a lucid dream about something immoral you should feel guilty because you had control over your dream during that period and probably wanted that to happen. Even though I believe you should feel guilty I don't think you should worry to much about it as long as you don't change for the worse because of it.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to lucid dreaming, I personally feel that you should feel, to a certain degree, some guilt. The reason why is because sometimes we just don't have control over our dreams and we just do something that we would have otherwise not done. However, the majority do have control over their dream when lucid dreaming occurs and therefore should feel guilty. Perhaps they need to analyze what they think about or what they see in order to stop their lucid dreaming if they feel guilty.
ReplyDeleteI think that when you are dreaming you are different than when you are awake so I don't think that you should feel guilty. It all just depends on who you are also. Some may feel very guilty and others might not feel guilty at all. As far as it being immoral and feeling guilty I wouldn't go that far. Simply, because you might be able to "control" your dream, but I feel that we act different and don't think logically when we are dreaming.
ReplyDeleteI believe that even though you could control what you dreamed about you should not feel guilty. Sometimes when we are dreaming I believe that even if it is lucid dreaming we are not 100% in control of what we are dreaming about and therefore can not feel entirely guilty. I think to as said above that if it is dwelt upon then that is when one should feel guilty. If you actually feel bad enough about it. Otherwise no i do not think that the person should feel immoral or guilty.
ReplyDeleteI don't feel you should feel guilty it's a dream and therefore I believe you do not have complete full control of your actions. You may have some control to a certain degree. Everyone is diffferent and what may seem bad to one may not seem bad to another. There's a difference between doing something immoral in the life we live then in the dream world. I think we aren't thinking as logical as we would in the life we live, in our dreams we kinda just do. Instead of really stopping and think about it.
ReplyDelete-Meg culp
Why would you feel guilty? Its not like you did it in real life.
ReplyDeleteNaturally, you will feel guilty. But even if you are having a lucid dream and you can control what you are doing I do not think that you are still 100% in control or aware of your actions. You still do things that you wouldn't do in real life. If you have had such a dream I think that you could feel guilty but you should try to not dwell on it. Even though you controlled you dream you shouldn't feel guilty.
ReplyDeleteI think that having these immoral dreams are totally fine, because I mean who knows what the heck you are dreaming about other then yourself so shoot I say it's fine. Be as immoral as you want dream what you want of whoever you want whenever you want. Because it's fine as long as you aren't gonna go out and do all those crazy things you dream about. You shouldn't feel guilt because it's not actually happening, but if you go out and do whatever thing you are dreaming out well then shoot! You are on your own!
ReplyDeleteI feel like you shouldn't feel guilty, it isn't really A sin if you have something happen immoral in your dream. I think that if you feel guilty because of something immoral happening in your dream, that you are actually feeling guilty about something you did while being alert. If that's the case I think you should go see a psychologist or someone you trust and get that guilty feeling to leave by venting about those feelings and what you did. If you go tell someone about those feelings and explain what you did, than I think you will be able to have lucid dreams without the feelings of guilt.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that you should feel guilty about your dreams because everyone deep down inside except maybe Justin beiber has those feelings. The only way I think to get rid of them is to dream about them to satisfy your desires. If not I think that it will build up and eventually find its way out and I think it would be much worse if it was done while consious.
ReplyDeleteI think you should feel slightly guilty about doing something immoral during a lucid dream. It is similar to the idea that you are responsible for the thoughts you have. But, you shouldn't dwell on it or feel too guilty. You just need to recognize what is happening and do your best to not experience those things over and over again.
ReplyDeleteThanks for blogging on this question. I sensed more angst from this question than from the other ones so far. Here are some thoughts to consider on this question. First of all, let’s understand that there is nothing wrong with feeling guilt. I like to equate guilt with pain. When you hurt something, pain warns you not to continue. Guilt in this sense is a warning telling you to not do something again. If you really think about it, it is very helpful. In fact, not heeding these warnings can lead to serious problems. But unremitting guilt, just like unremitting pain loses its value when there is really nothing to be warned from. In other words, phantom pain or chronic pain that doesn’t protect us can do more harm than good. The same can apply with needless guilt.
ReplyDeleteWith that said, let’s look at lucid dreaming. The question we really need to ask ourselves is how lucid (showing ability to think clearly) are we when we are having a lucid dream. I don’t believe there is a clear cut answer here. It can be more lucid for some than for others but regardless, you are still unconscious when you are having a lucid dream. I doubt you will ever be as lucid compared to your conscious state. Therefore, you are probably not as accountable for what you do in a lucid dream as you would be during your waking state.
So to sum it all up, should you feel guilt over a lucid dream? A little guilt is not a big deal - good to be warned about things you shouldn’t be doing - but you probably don’t need to beat yourself over the head with it.
Sweet dreams. :)
